Reptile and Amphibian Phenology in Krka, Croatia
This expedition builds on previous survey work around Krka National Park, timed specifically to catch the spring emergence and breeding season that earlier trips have missed. Alongside general species recording, we’ll continue an ongoing mark-recapture study on Hermann’s tortoises, tracking habitat use and population data, and a parallel mark-recapture programme on cat snakes contributing to a wider research dataset. If we are lucky, we will catch the elusive Leopard Snake (Zamenis situla) at this spot, alongside plenty of nose-horned vipers (Vipera ammodytes), lacertid lizards, and amphibians.
Scientific Value
Spring is a critical but under-surveyed window at this site, reptile emergence and amphibian breeding activity that previous, later-season visits have missed entirely. Alongside general occurrence recording, this expedition continues two ongoing mark-recapture datasets: Hermann’s tortoise population and habitat-use monitoring, and a parallel study tracking cat snake populations in the region. Participants directly contribute to both datasets in the field.
